It is common knowledge that earthquakes occur mostly in countries within the Pacific Ring of Fire. Earthquakes could hit anywhere and anytime and it is never too early to prepare for such a tragedy, but it could be too late if you don’t start now.
Start earthquake-proofing your home by these four easy steps.
Do Not Block Your Exits
Do not block your exits, or at least avoid doing so. Clearing the way to your door is necessary. Make sure that there are no appliances or furniture like cabinets and refrigerator that could topple over and block your exit. You should be aware that the living room and kitchen are the most potentially dangerous areas during a major earthquake. It should be on your safety measures when decorating your house that there shouldn’t be anything that blocks the exit or could block it when it topples over.
Store Cutlery and Glassware Mindfully
Place and put away dishes, ceramics, glassware, and cutlery. These things should not only be for decorative purposes; you must be mindful as to where you place them all. Keep breakable objects in lower cabinets, and if possible close and lock storages to prevent objects from falling out in case of an earthquake. Even sharp or hard objects must be kept carefully on secured drawers too.
Secure Furniture and Doors
Securing your appliances and furniture with drill fasteners will help you keep things from falling. It is highly recommended to use L-shaped metal fasteners on securing furniture by drilling it onto them and at the wall. Do it also on your breakable items’ storage and cabinets.
Apply for an Insurance
An earthquake can cause huge damages on houses as it could damage foundations and make walls collapse. The home insurance policy covers most natural disasters such as lightning, hail, and windstorm. However, it typically does not cover earthquake damage. A separate policy covers earthquake insurance and should be something you should invest too; since the earthquake happens at the most unexpected time.
Earthquake is one of the circumstances that are unavoidable and unpredictable. It could happen anytime, and when it occurs, we must be ready on how things could go. Secure your home to secure your loved ones.
